The first album “On These Heavy Feet” 2010 was just that – a heavy record – 14 songs. We recorded basic tracks in two days and I spent the next six weeks freaking out to meet my release date, spending way too much money in a studio arranging, recording, overdubbing, re-recording, producing, mixing, mastering, ect… It was my first big experience in the big studio with my full band (4 piece + strings, horns, ect…). I learned tons! But recording 14 songs at once while trying to perform full time was hard!

Willis began singing at a young age but did not start playing guitar until her high school years.^[3] As a student at DePaul, Willis began performing at open mics, which progressed to ongoing local Chicago performances and, eventually, the decision to leave school and go on the road. A touring band was formed and Willis toured extensively performing over 200 shows a year across the Midwest. In September 2007, Willis’ first EP Matter of Time was released independently.^[4]

Vanguard Records head Kevin Welk heard one of Willis’ songs on an American Airlines flight and sent A&R rep Gary Paczosa to Chicago to meet her.^[5] After signing a deal with Vanguard Records in 2008, Willis released her second EP, Exhibit A. In the latter half of 2009, Willis headed for the Tennessee hills to begin writing and recording her first full length album. What to Say was released in 2010. The album was co-produced by Tim Lauer and Grammy Award winning Gary Paczosa.^[6] “My Shoes”, a track from this record was featured on ABC’s Switched at Birth.^[7]

Album number two, Because I Can, was produced by Tim Lauer and released in 2011 on Vanguard Records.^[8] Shortly after the release, Willis was interviewed on NPR’s Weekend Edition Saturday with Host Scott Simon.^[1] Because I Can reached the #2 spot on iTunes Top 40 Singer/Songwriter Chart. The track titled “Sad” was featured on the CW Network One Tree Hill.^[9] Trevor Hall makes a guest appearance on the track titled “Circumstances”.

Dave Tamkin: That Thing Called “Love” – or Maybe Just “Life”

As an Indie acoustic artist on the Boulder Colorado music scene, Dave Tamkin, knows what it takes to live an innovative, yet traditionally themed, musical existence. His style has been compared to the likes of The Kinks and The Dave Matthews Band. According to Tamkin his style is a “freshly fueled” one, more similar to the alternative and soulful strums of bands like Toad the Wet Sprocket or the cross-genre rhythms of Martin Sexton.

With simple titles like “Fell,” “Prelude,” “Once Again” and “Traffic,” Tamkin’s message isn’t indecipherable or cryptic, but rather, an easily relatable one; to embrace life as it comes, to take advantage of daily setbacks and seemingly negative anomalies as means of learning something new. In his swinging and upbeat song, “Smile,” complemented by a touch of background female vocals, Tamkin does just that. He bounces along with his guitar while admonishing his listeners to “have the strength to smile,” even as he recollects about “giving a little something, [losing] a little something.”

Making moves

Tamkin’s songs deal with mechanics of existence. They are reflective of our daily lives while celebrating life and its nuances. This is evident in his choice to move from the urban, artistic fervor of Chicago to the relaxed and carefree nature of northern Colorado. Tamkin says “It’s beautiful … but musically, it’s a little different … it gives me time to breathe.” Although he thinks the move has had a positive effect on his development as a musician, the singer/songwriter acknowledges that it was rather unprecedented. Tamkin explains that the move was the result of meeting a girl whom he married three months ago.

Taking on love and life

However, Tamkin’s relocation to Boulder isn’t the only thing that was fueled by romance. If there’s any one overarching theme that manifests in his work, it’s “love for life and love for family” according to Tamkin. As such the message is all about connecting with other people, as well as securing a sense of validation for himself and his listeners. “The goal [is] to make people feel that they’re not alone” he says.

As love is a complex and perpetually enigmatic particle of humanity, Tamkin seems to have had no problem fulfilling his goal of reaching and identifying with his audience. With performances at Colorado hotspots like Morrison Holiday Bar in Morrison and the Appaloosa Grill in Denver, Tamkin has already tugged the heartstrings of his fan base; on Reverbnation alone, he has more than 29,000 listed fans.

Tamkin said he aims to be “fun and entertaining,” but sometimes the love aspect causes him to dive too deep into a sentimental oasis. An upcoming song, “Empty Pages,” is “about all the pages in your life that you have yet to read,” while another, “Drift” describes taking one’s life and choices into one’s own hands.

Although Tamkin has garnered a significant and devoted fan base, he is not so proud as to forget his years as a neophyte, a young and aspiring musician in college. Tamkin remembered how he started out with a major in Music Business, focusing on classical guitar before deciding to pursue a Business degree instead, a choice that he believes has benefitted his knowledge of how the industry works and provided him with something to fall back on.

Tamkin reminisced about his years at college, recounting how the dynamic of life shifts as one graduates, grows up: “You get more experience when you get a little older … there are a lot of changes – the love of your life … party scene to career scene.”

Looking ahead

It’s been 11 years since Dave Tamkin launched his career. But he isn’t losing his passion or his music’s poppy, albeit reflective flavor. With engaging songs like “Julieann” that brief a happenstance with a girl he never saw again, to upbeat tracks like “Lemonade,” Tamkin is sure to sustain his rapport among fans for years hence. Tamkin will always dig the musically-oriented and career-focused lifestyle that being a musician entails. He hopes to never lose sight of the dreams that make himself as well as the rest of us human.

DENVER – The Denver Nordic Ski Association (Ski Denver) is pioneering urban skiing in the mile-high city. To make this a reality, popular local artists Opie Gone Bad, Dave Tamkin and Jonah Wisneski will play a free concert fundraiser on October 22. The Ginn Mill will host the event as part of its “Make A Difference Monday” series and will donate 100 percent of proceeds from drink sales to Ski Denver to support the development of groomed cross-country ski trails in Denver.

Doors open at 7 p.m. Dave Tamkin and Jonah Wisneski take the stage at 7:30pm, and headliner Opie Gone Bad starts at 8:30 p.m. Chipotle will give away a free burrito card to the first 200 attendees, starting at 7 p.m.

The fundraiser features thousands of dollars in door prizes from Rudy Project, Rossignol, Fischer, Devil’s Thumb Ranch, Boulder Nordic Sport, Snow Mountain Ranch, Wilderness Exchange, Wheat Ridge Cyclery and other local outdoor retailers. Suggested donation to enter the door prize drawing is $5, and Ski Denver will double the entries for members who sign up before or during the concert.

Shoeshine Boy’s Summer Metro Showcase

On Friday, July 13, 2012, Chicago’s Shoeshine Boy Productions will showcase five acts at the famed Chicago METRO (3730 N. Clark).  The show will feature the music of Chicago native, Dave Tamkin and his band, American Idol contestant Jeffrey David, pop rockers, Sunfallen and Dan Tedesco, and up and comer Sean Skyler.

Chicago Singer/Songwriter, Dave Tamkin, currently residing in Boulder. has created his own unique style of rhythmic-acoustic rock.Dave Tamkin and Co. is the full band experience encapsulating a mixture of personal lyrics and creative musicians set against a high-energy percussive backbone. With a new album being recorded in the Colorado Mountains, the band looks forward to bringing out a few of the new tunes for its return to Chicago.

Singer-Songwriter Jeffrey David began his musical journey while attending the University of Kansas, playing in “frat rock” bands.  Upon his departure from Kansas, Goldford moved to Austin, TX where his band, the Everyday People quickly distinguished themselves in the world famous live music city with their unique blend of soulful rock tunes.  Goldford advanced past three rounds of competition to the top 50 on American Idol, but with only 18 guys remaining for 12 spots, Jeffrey was eliminated.  In Fall of 2010, Goldford recorded and released an acoustic version of the famed Kings of Leon hit single, “Use Somebody”. Shortly after, it was picked up by Sirius/XM Satellite radio. Goldford remains in regular rotation heard most commonly on “The Coffee House” station.  As an active singer-songwriter, Jeffrey continues to perform for his fans across the country with plans for his new album in the Fall of 2012.

Rising singer/songwriter Sean Skyler has spent the past year wowing fans of other major acts (Art Alexakis, Everclear, Clayton Senne, and Mark Rose) to become a local favorite. After winning an unsigned artist promotion for Target Stores and Mead Notebooks, Sean and his band recorded his first full band EP titled Big Mistake (now on iTunes) with producer Michael Vail Blum (Goo Goo Dolls, Julian Lennon).

Rolling through 20 states in the first 5 months of 2012, Dan Tedesco has hardly had time to breathe. Performing his self-described “folk rock on steroids”, Tedesco’s unique solo performance finds him moving seamlessly from electric to acoustic guitar, as well as keyboards, complimented with touches of harmonica and no-nonsense foot stomping on his custom made stompbox. Currently, he is supporting his 2011 raw and stripped down release, Tracks On Fire, produced and engineered by Duane Lundy (Jim James, Ben Sollee, These United States, Vandaveer).

Also on the bill is southside’s Sunfallen.
